Backing Up Wise Software Programs

Proper backups are the only protection for your Wise Software data—especially for the older versions whose file structures naturally degrade over time. This page explains how each version stores its data and the correct method for creating reliable backups.

Wise Software Version 7 (1/1/1985 – 1/1/2020)

Data Folder Location:

C:\Wise07\Data

Version 7 stores all customer, billing, route, and configuration data inside the Data folder. Because this version is decades old, the file structure can wear out over time, eventually leading to corrupted data. Once corruption occurs, there is no way to repair the files, so backups are essential.

How to Back Up Version 7

  1. Open File Explorer.

  2. Navigate to:

    C:\Wise07\Data

  3. Copy all files and subfolders inside the Data folder.

  4. Paste them onto another drive such as:

    • An external hard drive

    • A USB thumb drive

    • A network drive

  5. For best results, zip the copied files before storing them. This keeps the backup clean and reduces the chance of file damage.

Wise Software Version 6 (1/1/1980 – 1/1/1985)

Data Folder Location:

C:\wise\Data

Version 6 uses an older file system that is even more prone to wear and corruption. Backups are critical to preserving your historical data.

How to Back Up Version 6

  1. Open File Explorer.

  2. Navigate to:

    C:\wise\Data

  3. Copy all files and folders inside the Data directory.

  4. Save them to a separate drive or thumb drive.

  5. Zip the backup files to keep them organized and protected.

Newer Wise Software Programs

Modern versions of Wise Software include automatic daily backups, removing the need for manual copying. However, it is still wise to keep occasional off‑system backups for long‑term safety.

Why Backups Matter

Older Wise Software versions were built in an era when file systems had physical limitations. Over many years of use:

  • File structures weaken

  • Data becomes fragmented

  • Corruption can occur without warning

Once corruption happens, there is no method to correct or restore the damaged files unless a backup exists.

Recommended Backup Schedule

To protect your business data:

  • Back up at least once per month

  • Always use a different drive each time

  • Keep multiple copies stored in different locations

This ensures that if one drive fails, you still have earlier backups available.

Summary

Backing up Wise Software—especially Versions 6 and 7—is not optional. It is the only safeguard against irreversible data loss. Regular monthly backups, stored on rotating drives and zipped for protection, will keep your historical records safe for years to come.
